Researchers at Ben-Gurion University taught six goldfish to drive a motorized fish tank in just 10 days – creating a very unique driving school
The car was designed to move depending on the fish's location in its tank, showing animals can understand how to navigate foreign environments
One might think that certain animals are only able to navigate within the environment in which their species evolved. According to a new study, however, goldfish are quite capable of steering a land-based "car" toward a land-based target, in order to get a food pellet.
Researchers from the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev tested a fish's navigational abilities by teaching it to swim to a target for a reward.
This is not the first study to demonstrate the ability of fish to navigate their environments. A similar study took place in 2014. However, it is the first of its kind to have the fish do it on dry land.
