The completion of a new bus stop has marked a transformative step for Byron Bay.
The new Byron Bay bus interchange, on Butler St, cost $8.4 million, 50 jobs were involved in its construction and it will take hundreds of buses off Jonson St, member of the Legislative Council and parliamentary secretary for energy and the arts Ben Franklin said when he officially opened the facility on Monday.
Mr Franklin, who was representing Regional Transport and Roads Minister Paul Toole at the opening, applauded the end result of the interchange, which follows the completion of the Byron Bay Bypass, which opened in February after 30 years of planning, and the award-winning changes to Railway Park. ....

It was meant to be Australia s first major music festival since the pandemic began.
The news Bluesfest Byron Bay could not be held this week, delivered on the eve of the first day of music, has likely left a $100 million hole in the local economy.
While this year s festival was due to run at half-capacity, director Peter Noble previously said the last event in 2019 put $200 million into the economy.
As organisers, music lovers and the array of people who would have worked at Bluesfest come to terms with the news Bluesfest 2021 is, at best, on hold until later in the year, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has expressed enthusiasm that the Sydney Royal Easter Show would proceed this long weekend. ....

The Public Safety Network (PSN) in the Northern Rivers has been expanded with the completion of two new sites at Girard and Toonumbar.
Nationals Member of the Legislative Council Ben Franklin said the new radio sites, delivered by the NSW Telco Authority, are vital to ongoing community safety across the Northern Rivers.
PSN sites provide emergency services organisations with a single, integrated network on which to communicate, Mr Franklin said.

'A locals' road': Byron's bypass finally open to traffic

It s not going to change the world, Cr Richardson said.
It s not going to change the traffic in a way that allows us to now cruise down and remember the 80s, but what it will do is allow locals to get around town.
For me, it s a locals road.

When its comes to dishing out bushfire recovery money, politicians should remain colour blind.
Labor shouldn t just see red, Liberals shouldn t just see blue, and Greens should represent every colour under the rainbow, not just green.
The Berejiklian Government is rightly having the blowtorch applied to its belly over its handling of the Bushfire Local Economic Recovery fund.
Every fair-minded person would probably assume this money is dished out fairly on a needs basis.
The neediest areas, after the horrendous 2019-20 bushfire season, are pretty obvious for everyone to see.
While plenty of infrastructure burnt down and needs to be replaced, there s also still plenty of people living in caravans and tents waiting for money to flow. ....
