Bertram Wentzek, a former executive chef for Yosemite National Park’s Ahwahnee Hotel, was revered for his extraordinary skill in the kitchen, particularly with pastries. He also drew recognition for his sharp tongue, kind heart and missing finger, which was blown off by a stray shell in his hometown, Bremerhaven, Germany, in 1945.
Wentzek died at 87 last week in his home in Hemet, California, and his passing prompted an outpouring of memories on social media from family members, friends and Yosemite co-workers and neighbors from the 1980s.
