New study on pancreatic islet cell loss in healthy individuals exposed notable patterns in cell loss.

On March 16, Prof. James Lo, pharmacology cell and developmental biology, and his team published a study identifying different types of cells in the pancreas, an organ responsible for aiding digestion and regulating sugar levels. The research team found one particular cell type to be closely linked to the development of type 2 diabetes.

Two distinct subtypes of insulin-producing beta cells, or ss cells, have been discovered by a team of researchers led by scientists from the Van Andel Institute and Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics. Each of these ss cell subtypes possesses critical traits that may be used to better understand and treat Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
