The audit found that Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft withdrew the state from a voter information service that had helped officials ensure dead people are no longer registered.
The surprise announcement is bound to intensify divisions in a Missouri Senate that has been marred this year by dysfunction and acrimony.
“I just can’t sit by any longer and allow them to continue to snow the voters,” said Holly Thompson Rehder, a Sikeston Republican who is running for lieutenant governor.
“These are political opinions under the guise of an audit report that are being put forth by an agency that doesn’t even understand the issues that they’re talking about,” Ashcroft said.
“The beginning of the 2024 legislative session in the Senate has been nothing short of an embarrassment,” Rowden said.
