3 Left MPs move motion against UCC bill | India News

NEW DELHI: Three Left party MPs in Rajya Sabha have moved a motion against the introduction of a private member’s bill on the Uniform Civil Code, saying such legislation would damage communal harmony.
BJP MP Kirodi Lal Meena was scheduled to introduce the Uniform Civil Code in India Bill 2021, but he could not do so as the House was adjourned after repeated disruptions. CPI Rajya Sabha member Binay Viswam and CPI(M) MPs Elamaram Kareem and V Sivadasan moved the motion.
In a letter to Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu, Viswam said the demand for a Uniform Civil Code has a complicated and polarising history that dates back to independence.
