Don Palathara hails from Karunapuram in Idukki, barely three kilometres from Kambammettu in Tamil Nadu. The 34-year-old director has four films to his credit – Savam, Vithu,1956, Central Travancore, and Santhoshathinte Onnam Rahasyam, two of which are being screened at the ongoing International Film Festival of Kerala. Considered as an auteur director by critics, Don is heralded as an exponent of contemplative cinema. Among other things he talks about his fascination for minimalism and why slowburn films matter:
Your first three films – Savam, Vithu and 1956, Central Travancore- were all shot in black & white. The latest one Santhoshathinte Onnam Rahasyam, though in colour, uses a limited palette. Have you changed as a filmmaker since your first film in 2015? ....

The Hill Palace in Tripunithura, the administrative seat of the erstwhile Kingdom of Cochin, which became a museum in 1984, was never short on material artifacts the tangible records that help us connect to our past but only a few of them had a direct connection with the Perumpadappu Swaroopam. Most of these objects were till recently showcased based on classifications like inscriptions, weapons, and jewellery in separate rooms.
When tasked with curating a thematic narrative of the origin, life, and contributions of the Cochin royal family, Prasanna K Varma, faced a unique dilemma. She herself was a member of the family born and brought up in Tripunithura and was familiar with its stories because of her involvement with the work of Cochin Royal Family History and Heritage Society (CRFHHS). ....

Fumigated movie halls and antigentested delegates would be the hallmark of the 25th edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), which opens on February 10 at Thiruvananthapuram and would be mirrored in Kochi and Thalassery and Palakkad.
The prestigious festival despite the absence of international guests and programmers promises to be an interesting fare despite the reduced number of films.
Jasmila Zbanic’s ‘Quo Vadis, Aida?’ (Where are you going, Aida?) in the backdrop of Bosnia’s brutal genocide would open the festival, which has close to 90 films, half of what a regular festival had. The film, which was completed over many years, tells the story of a woman translator who tries to save her husband and sons during the July 1995 massacre in Srebrenica where an estimated 8,000 Muslim men and boys were killed. ....
