Van earthquake of 2011, also called Erciş earthquake or Erciş-Van earthquake, severe earthquake that struck near the cities of Erciş and Van in eastern Turkey on October 23, 2011. More than 570 people were killed, and thousands of structures in Erciş, Van, and other nearby towns were destroyed. The earthquake was felt as far away as Jordan and southern Russia.
