Guwahati–Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday allocated the finance portfolio to Ajanta Neog, making her the first woman Finance Minister of the northeastern state.
Neog, who was elected to the state Assembly from the Golaghat assembly constituency in eastern Assam, would also hold the social welfare portfolio.
After assuming charge in the finance department, Neog said that Chief Minister Sarma had announced after taking the oath on Monday that the aim of the new government is to make Assam one of the top five states in India in the next five years, and she would work and plan accordingly to achieve the target.

Guwahati, May 4 : The number of women legislators in the 126-member Assam Assembly has been declining from a high of 14 in 2011, eight in 2016 and only six this time.
In all 74 women candidates (7.8 per cent) among the total of 946 aspirants contested the recently held three-phase Assam Assembly elections and only six of them entered into the Assembly -- three are of the ruling BJP, one of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and two of opposition Congress.
In the previous Assam Assembly elections in 2016, 91 women candidates were in the fray with eight of them elected to the 126-member House while in 2011, 85 women had tried their electoral fate and 14, highest so far in the House, secured the success.

Guwahati, May 3 : The ruling BJP-led alliance, which returned to power in Assam for the second consecutive term, secured 11 seats less than the 2016 assembly polls. The Bharatiya Janata Party, the dominant partner of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), bagged 60 seats, similar to what it got five years ago. The NDA went on to finally win 75 seats in the 126 member assembly.
BJP's old ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) won nine seats against 14 seats that it won last time while its new partner United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) won six seats as the Bodoland based party for the first time contested the assembly elections.

New Delhi: In the 2016 assembly elections, the BJP was in a pre-poll alliance with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodo People’s Front (BPF). Together, the three parties won 86 of the 126 assembly seats of the state. While the AGP contested 24 seats and won 14, the BPF contested 16 seats and won 12 of them.
The Congress which had ruled the state for three consecutive terms under the chief ministership of Tarun Gogoi, contested 122 seats in the 2016 assembly polls but could win only 26 of them. It lost 53 seats in that election and was forced to form the opposition. In May 2016, a BJP-led government was formed with Sarbananda Sonowal as its chief minister.

Guwahati: Around half of the 40 candidates announced in the Congress' first list for the Assam Assembly polls are fresh faces, while 15 per cent of them are women and 5 per cent Muslim nominees.
The main opposition party late on Saturday night released the first list of 40 candidates for the 47 Assembly constituencies that are going to the polls in Assam in the first phase on March 27.
According to the list, announced by Congress' Central Election Committee in-charge and party General Secretary Mukul Wasnik, six women - Sibamoni Bora (Batadroba), Roselina Tirkey (Serupathar), Bismita Gogoi (Khumtai), Pallabi Gogoi (Teok), Angkita Dutta (Amguri) and Pranatee Phukan (Naharkatia) and two Muslim candidates - Mohammad Nurul Huda (Rupohihat) and Rakibul Hussain (Samaguri) - were given party tickets.
