Two-time Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi, 38, has come a long way from being the shy young man who was thrust into politics by his father, the late Tarun Gogoi. And, for the Congress, the forthcoming Assam elections is the first in a long time without Gogoi senior at the helm. In a free-wheeling interview with Outlook, Gaurav Gogoi, the Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, talks about his party’s pre-poll tie-up with the AIUDF and how the eight-party alliance is planning to bring down the BJP. Assam elections 'a conflict of civilisations', Congress-AIUDF alliance polarised polls: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati: Assam minister Himata Biswa Sarma has branded the upcoming Assembly elections in the state to be a polarised contest and blamed the Congress-All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) pre-poll alliance for making the poll battle a 'conflict of civilisations'.
He added the elections would have been fought on the plank of development had the Grand Old Party contested separately.
"By forging an alliance with communal party Congress has polarised the election. Had Congress contested separately, polls would have been fought on development issues. But by aligning with AIUDF, the Congress has made this poll a conflict of civilizations," Sarma told news agency ANI.

Assam local polls: UPPL-BJP-GSP alliance proves strength in BTC floor test

The BPF — Bodoland People’s Front — is an ally of the BJP in the state government and there are three ministers from the party in the cabinet. However, the BJP joined hands with the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL).
When the BJP did not ally with the BPF, Hagrama Mohilary, BPF supremo and an influential Bodo leader, approached the Gauhati High Court, challenging the manner in which the Chief Executive Member and other executive members were appointed and alleging violation of constitutional provisions.
The HC on Tuesday ordered a floor test to be held before December 26.
Meanwhile, Mohilary on Thursday said that he was not satisfied with the outcome and will consider his next legal step. He said that the party wants a floor test through secret ballot and not raising hands. “We will challenge today’s proceedings in court,” Mohilary said.
