Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has once again hit out at the Congress over its alliance with Badruddin Ajmal-led AIUDF, claiming that this will push the party back "by 50 years".
"In the early 80s, the Congress got alienated from the people of Assam. It took the party 25 years, first with Hiteshwar Saikia and then Tarun Gogoi, to rebuild Congress in Assam, but by aligning with Ajmal, they have pushed the party back by another 50 years," Mr Sarma told NDTV.
"Our question is, you have five guarantees, you have Rahul (Gandhi), Priyanka (Gandhi Vadra), so why do you need Ajmal?" he asked, referencing the Congress's new five-guarantee campaign announced by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra earlier this month.

Noted academician and intellectual Hiren Gohain has resigned as the chief adviser of Raijor Dal over the political stand of its president, jailed rights activist Akhil Gogoi, involving the minority-based All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).
Mr. Gogoi had in an open letter asked all Opposition parties to field consensus candidates across Assam’s 126 Assembly seats in order to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from retaining power. But he wanted the AIUDF to be kept out of such an arrangement as he believed the party headed by Maulana Badruddin Ajmal was as communal as the BJP.

With less than a month to go for elections in Assam, controversial BJP MP Tejasvi Surya on Sunday attacked the Congress-AIUDF opposition alliance, comparing the latter party - the All India United Democratic Front - to the Mughals, while addressing a youth rally in Dibrugarh district.
"Congress is the stooge of (AIUDF chief) Badruddin Ajmal, who is a representative of the Mughals. We have to discard them... drive them out to create a new Assam," he said.
This was the first rally organised by Surya and the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, which is the youth wing of the ruling BJP, since the Election Commission announced polling dates on Friday.
