Joining us now with the very latest is nbc s jacob ward jake, good morning it s good to see you, what are investigators telling you they ve learned so far reporter: good morning, jose. investigators on the ground have basically very few, you know, outrageously obvious clues to go with this was a crash, as you know, that took eight cars off the tracks, but in perfectly clear weather and on a totally clear stretch of track that, in fact, bnsf, the company that operates the tracks, says it inspected just three days ago. we spoke to a former ntsb board member yesterday, who said that if anything she expects that investigators will be looking most closely at the connection between the train cars and the tracks themselves, that the external factors otherwise don t jump out as you know, three people unfortunately were killed at this time. fortunately, all passengers are now accounted for. that was up in the air for a ....

reporter: local authorities need to figure out why the three on board died and why some of those were able to make it to safety. the national transportation board will kick off a big human factor investigation in all of this and they will also be looking at the speed of the train, whether or not it was under a speed restriction on that portion of track, which is operated by bnsf, not amtrak itself. they will also be looking at the geometry of the tracks, whether or not that could have caused a problem, whether or not the rails were perfectly straight, whether or not the ties were in the proper position. this is just kicking off a long investigation until we figure out what exactly caused this train to derail. pete munteen appreciate your reporting this morning, thank you for that. let s bring in mary schiavo former inspector general with the u.s. department of transportation and cnn transportation analyst. always good to have you. knowing what we know, seeing those images, mary, an ....

Rocking back and forth and tuns of noise and then we came to a stop and really it was we didn t know what was going on. reporter: amtrak now has an incident response team on the ground to help out with this ntsb investigation, which is just getting started. a lot of factors here. speed will be one of the big factors that investigators will look at, whether or not this train was under a speed restriction on this section of track. the entire empire builder line, the entire trip, takes about 45 hours from chicago to seattle. the average speed about 50 miles an hour. the train can go up to 80 miles an hour. another tack tore that investigators will look into is track geometry, whether or not the rails were perfectly straight, whether the ties were in the right spot. the rails themselves were operated by a company called bnsf and it tells me it is assisting in this investigation. and pete, we heard from mary schiavo, one of our cnn experts on transportation this morning, ....

first of all, they ll go for the black box, of course, and download the information about the speed, the controls, whether there was time for braking, you know, where everyone was and what everyone was doing in terms of the locomotive crew on the train, but also they will be looking at the controls on the track and, of course, i believe it s bsnf that has the track, that owns the track, and where that section of track was being controlled, who was controlling it, and what they were doing. also they re going to be looking because sadly this plays into a lot of accidents is whether there was any work going on on the track or that section of track at the time. that will be very important as well. you know, they always look into whether systems that are aavailable for train tracks and trains all over the country to control the trains, the speeds, would have made any difference and that may or may not come into it. ....
