Wisconsin AD Alvarez Stepping Down June 30th Longtime University of Wisconsin-Madison athletic director Barry Alvarez (pictured) announced his retirement on Tuesday, effective June 30th, after more than 30 years with the Badgers program. Alvarez came to Wisconsin as the school's head football coach in 1990 after a successful stint as an assistant coach at Notre Dame under Lou Holtz.  After a 1-10 start in 1990, he led them to a Big Ten title and a Rose Bowl victory after the 1993 season.
