South Africa moves closer to digital television, as analogue broadcasting services above 694MHz go off across the country, with telcos expected to soon get spectrum go-ahead.
Minister Mondli Gungubele’s department will shortly announce the final date for analogue switch-off, to free up much-needed spectrum.
As the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT) works to complete its South Africa Connect (SA Connect) programme, it is mandating the State Information Technology Agency (SITA) to launch a R6-billion national broadband project. The project, to be awarded per region, aims to ensure that government reduces the cost of communication infrastructure from municipality up to national government level, said Communications and Digital Technologies Minister Mondli Gungubele.
During a briefing on Friday she said this may have a negative impact not only on people, but also the economy.
