Northville Township site of psychiatric hospital still mostly desolate

Fenced-off brick buildings infested with asbestos still tarnish the sprawling Northville Township property that served as home to the Northville State Regional Psychiatric Hospital until it was closed by then-Governor John Engler in 2003.
Enriched by wildlife, wetlands and towering trees, the 300-acre site appears from the perimeter to be an idyllic place for many levels of recreation, but it remains mostly forbidden ground for people due to the unhealthy interiors of the 11 outlying buildings that continue to stand almost three years after the facility s nine-story main building was demolished.
All but a handful of ambitious plans to renovate the nature-abundant area into a recreational haven   a series of beginner-level biking trails and a one-mile hiking trail that opened on the site in 2020 are the exception  have yet to move beyond the drawing board, mostly due to a lack of adequate financing, former and current township leaders lament. ....
