MIT engineers are taking to nature to study its structures and translate them into wooden buildings.
Forks in tree trunks and branches are exceptionally strong, yet they are rejected in timber construction because they are not straight. Using digital and computational methods, MIT researchers have developed an approach that enables architects to use discarded tree forks as load-bearing joints in their structures.
To unite climate efforts, maximize their impact, and identify new ways for MIT to contribute climate solutions, MIT has appointed more than a dozen faculty to its new Climate Nucleus, a committee established by the Institute’s “Fast Forward” climate action plan. The committee will be co-chaired by professors Noelle Selin and Anne White.
