What was Christchurch like when The Press first hit the streets in 1861?
We move in closer to the South Island and focus on Christchurch, nestled between the Waimakariri River and the Port Hills. As time continues to spool backwards, the plains, the Port Hills and the Banks Peninsula sprout trees and bush that push in towards the shrinking city. The suburbs fade away and railway lines unpick themselves as we get lower still and move in towards the centre of the city. The four avenues, those four roads that once so clearly defined the edge of the city centre, start to fade.
