Artist restoring decades-old downtown Los Altos murals

Written by Bruce Barton - Staff Writer
Jan Meyer’s trompe l’oeil murals depicting everyday life in Los Altos remain familiar visuals decades after they were painted. Now the veteran artist and longtime resident is busy restoring them.

Jan Meyer applies her artistic touch to a mural at Los Altos Hardware.
Meyer originally painted 18 murals around Los Altos, 11 of which remain, mostly in the downtown area. Some dating back to the mid-1980s have faded over time, prompting her renewed efforts.
A busy life schedule left mural restoration on the back burner for Meyer. Earlier this year she worked to prepare an exhibition of paintings at Gallery 9, where she is a member. Then the pandemic hit and the gallery closed for months. She had been doing a lot of painting and before long, her attention turned to arguably her most famous pieces – her murals.
