I’m in the middle of reading Robert Gordon’s It Came from Memphis, which has stories on Memphis musicians and characters from the ’50s through the ’90s, and which was reissued in an 25th anniversary edition with updates last year. Some of the stories are hilarious, some are heartbreaking, but they are all compelling, and Gordon is a phenomenal writer. As far as music goes, I just got Neil Young’s overpriced ten-CD Archives II, which I’m slowly working my way through, and which has reminded me how many great songs he was writing in the early-mid ’70s.
