The new Kiwi drinking culture: Bubble boom launches bubble tea shops across NZ
Maisie Hance was 17, far from her home in Christchurch on an adventure around China when she first discovered pào chá. Some students in Wuhan had offered to show Hance the city. They ended up late night shopping at a nearby mall, and found a store selling what’s known in New Zealand as bubble tea. This was almost five years ago, in 2016, long before bubble tea had become commonplace in New Zealand towns.
