Though Justin Lelesch has been Abilene's Animal Services director since the end of April, his roughly five-year tenure at the city's animal shelter makes him a "known quantity," City Manager Robert Hanna said. Abilene Gives 2021 took in a record amount, just shy of $2 million, the 24-hour fundraiser attracting 4,257 donors supporting a list of 140 nonprofits to AbileneGives.org. The clear winner of the day was Camp Able of Buffalo Gap, which raised a whopping $112,611.11, the first time any nonprofit has broken the $100,000 mark, said Katie Alford, president and chief executive officer of the Community Foundation of Abilene.
