TRIBUTES have been pouring in for a doctor who discovered the outbreak of a deadly disease two decades ago.

A PATIENT treated for Legionnaires' disease passed on an emotional thank you note to the doctor who uncovered the outbreak 20 years ago this month.

Hundreds of people gathered outside Furness General Hospital to pay their respects to a ‘gentleman’ doctor before his funeral. Current staff members, ex-colleagues and members of the public paid an emotional tribute and clapped for long-serving rheumatoid specialist Dr William Smith Mitchell, who dedicated more than 30 years to the hospital before he sadly died of pulmonary fibrosis. Readers have paid tribute to Dr William Smith Mitchell, who has sadly died. Dr Mitchell was a rheumatoid specialist and worked at Barrow’s Furness General Hospital for more than 30 years. One of Dr Mitchell’s most prominent achievements was being the first to spot the outbreak of the legionnaires disease at The Forum in 2002. The outbreak, in which seven people died, was ranked the second worst in British history. Dr Mitchell’s daughter, Caroline Biggins, said that he was a ‘loving’ father and his family were his 'world'.
