Stephen Harris shows a young hiker and his family one of the metal bands that once surrounded the water flume that powered the Carter Falls power plant. Stephen Harris points out the power pole that took electricity from the Carter Falls powerhouse to Elkin to a group of hikers during NC Trail Days. The year was 1915. That marked the first hydro-electric power plant at Carter Falls which brought electricity to the town of Elkin.

A stream restoration project is under way on a section of creek above Carter Falls. A stream restoration project near Carter Falls began in late March with aid received due to damage from two major hurricanes in 2018. Resource Institute, a nonprofit headquartered in Winston-Salem which helps restore America’s streams, rivers and wetlands, is providing services and assistance to Surry County to help with the restoration project on properties above Carter Falls.
