From GA to LA: Pelican coated in Deepwater Horizon oil finds way home

And back home it is. This brown pelican was covered in oil during the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in 2010, rescued and cleaned then flown to and released in Georgia. It was spotted in March on a rock jetty on Queen Bess Island in Barataria Bay by a Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries biologist. The pelican was tagged “Red 33Z” when captured on June 14, 2010, at the Empire Jetties in Barataria Bay in the wake of the giant oil spill. It was among 5,000 oil-covered birds collected in and off Louisiana during the spill, and among 582 pelicans that were rehabilitated, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said in a news release Thursday.
