Scientists say fire damage in some sequoia groves this year could rival that of last...
Firefighters say decades of prescribed fire – highly controlled burns overseen by professionals – have helped save giant sequoias amid KNP Complex.
These giant trees have actually adapted to periodic fires over the past couple few hundred years. The bark of the tree can be up to 18-inches thick and the fibers help not only resist burning but also insulate the tree from the heat of the fire.
The most immediate danger is from the KNP Complex, a recent merging of the recently sparked Paradise Fire and Colony fire, which has grown to 25,142 acres and is 0 percent contained.
The sequoias are "wrapped with house-wrapping material, kind of an aluminum-foil fabric that goes around the base of the trees," says Jon Wallace, who is helping to lead the firefighting effort.
