Work under way retrieve two buses that crashed into a large wash-out in the Kawarau Gorge, near Cromwell, in 1967.
“We thought we’d go out and see if we could help,” he said.
Just after the Roaring Meg, about 13 kilometres from Cromwell, they came across a huge gaping hole in the road, large enough to fit the Railways Roads Service buses that had crashed into it.
“We were scratching our heads wondering what to do. We didn’t know if the buses were full of passengers or what,” Hobbs said.
