Every household in England, Wales and Northern Ireland must take part.
As such, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and its counterparts don't need people's personal information, just an address.
Letters should have started arriving in the post this week, providing instructions on how to get started.
They will have to finish the census by this coming Sunday on March 21.

Completing the form is a legal requirement, and anyone who doesn't comply may face prosecution.
Section 8 of the Census Act 1920 lays out several potential punishments for people who dodge the census.

Who can see my Census data?

Modern censuses take place every decade, information from which is safeguarded by data collection agencies.
They do not keep information people could use to identify people living in the households surveyed, meaning no-one can see individual census data.
Names and dates of birth only allow agencies to cross people off their list of homes contacted.
The Government does not handle census data, but statistics authorities follow Government rules.

Per these rules, they must protect personal information, with confidentiality protected by law.

Rejoin the EU, which wants to drag the UK back into the bloc, urged its followers on Facebook to enter their nationality as European in the 2021 Census. In the post, the campaign group shared instructions on how to do this.

Census 2021 will reveal how a year of lockdowns and furlough has transformed the UK

Many people may feel unsure as to whether the English, Welsh and Northern Irish census of 2021 should be going ahead, given that it’s occurring during a pandemic when many aspects of our lives are far from normal. The census has actually been postponed by a year in Scotland due to these concerns.
Census timing has appeared unfortunate before. The 2001 census took place during the peak of the foot and mouth disease outbreak, amid concerns that census officials might spread the disease between farms.
Because most people will fill in their 2021 census form online, disease transmission is less of a concern this year. But there’s another criticism levelled at censuses: that they only ever deliver a snapshot of a population at a specific time, no matter how unusual or temporary the circumstances within a household may be.

Is anyone exempt from completing the census?

Census 2021 is fast approaching, with submission dates set for March 21. People will have already started receiving their prompts in the post, which outline how to take the survey online. Not everyone may want to take it, but refusing to do so could have severe consequences.

The census is a survey that takes place every 10 years and gives officials a picture of all the people and households living in England and Wales, with the next due on Sunday, March 21. Your answers to the census questions will help organisations make decisions on planning and funding public services in your area. This can include healthcare, transport and education. Every household should complete the census by the March 21 deadline or as soon as possible after. The census should take about 10 minutes for the household questions and 10 minutes per person.

The census should be completed by every household by Sunday, March 21 or "as soon as possible" after this date. If you’ve responded before the deadline but things have changed at home, you can contact the census for free to let them know. The census should take about 10 minutes for the household questions and 10 minutes per person. The last census took place in 2011, and the next one will be in 2031. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) runs the census in England and Wales, and if you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, different rules will apply.

Census 2021: I live in Scotland - do I have to complete the Census this year?

In 2021, Scots will miss the census, as the Scottish Parliament has suspended it.
The National Records of Scotland (NRS) conducts the national census and announced earlier this year it would move to 2022.
The organisation cited COVID-19 in its decision, stating the virus has impacted "vital preparations for the census".
Instead, authorities will take the time they need and administer the questionnaire by March next year.

Paul Lowe, NRS Registrar General and Chief Executive, said the organisation wanted to make sure everyone could participate.

Census records gave insight into lives of Jack the Ripper victims

The name "Jack the Ripper" originated in a letter written by an individual claiming to be the murderer that was later disseminated in the media.
However, the letter is widely believed to have been a hoax and may have been written by journalists in an attempt to heighten interest in the story and increase their newspapers' circulation.
After more than a century of speculation, rumour and legend about the killer, ten years ago historians ploughed through census records to gain insight into the lives of the women he targeted.
Studies of the 1881 census showed that far from being the young, lifelong prostitutes that modern cinema portrays, the victims were actually often older and married with children.

Delayed due to COVID-19, Census work may begin this year, says MHA

The fieldwork for the first phase of census 2021 will be carried out during 2021-22 even though timelines are yet to be finalised, the government told the panel, as per the report.

Census 2021 scam warning issued as criminals are 'tricking' people out of their NI numbers

This can include transport, education and healthcare.
The Government notes the census should take about 10 minutes for household questions and 10 minutes per person involved.
Given the importance of the census, it is worrying that cybersecurity experts and the police themselves are warning of phishing scams posing as communications for the 2021 census.
Tony Pepper, the CEO of cybersecurity firm Egress, commented on this: “In the last year, we’ve seen phishing scams rise dramatically, with cybercriminals taking advantage of everything from Christmas shopping to coronavirus vaccines.
The census must be completed by March 31 (Image: GETTY/PA IMAGES)
"Unfortunately, with the 2021 Census approaching, cybercriminals are once again sending phishing emails and text messages aimed at tricking recipients out of their sensitive data, such as financial information or National Insurance numbers.

The form will indicate which questions you need to answer, and which ones you don’t.
However, you do have to fill out the census, even if you don’t want to - it is against the law to ignore a census, and you can be fined up to £1,000 if you do not participate or give false information.
If you don’t submit a form, census field officers may visit your household.
Their job is to encourage you to complete it and show you how to get further help if you need it.
