A small part of Autoroute 20 westbound is closed for roadwork until 5 a.m. Monday, one of many closures taking place this weekend.

The bridge has been out of service since June 2019, 57 years after its inauguration. 

A new phase of deconstruction of the former Champlain Bridge, which linked Montreal and the South Shore for 57 years, will begin in the coming weeks: the removal of the bridge's piers and underwater footings.

  MONTREAL -- The dismantling of the old Champlain Bridge began in earnest Monday, with the first of 30 concrete spans removed. A complex undertaking, the entire effort is slated to cost about $400 million. Most of the work will be carried out on floating platforms, away from residential areas. The platforms reduce the amount of rubble landing in the river, and allow much of the bridge material to be recycled.
