Draft day 'a dream come true' for Montreal Canadiens prospect Riley Kidney | iNFOnews

After an unsettled season that limited opportunities for junior hockey players and NHL scouts alike, Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving believes it will take some time before the real winners of this year's draft can be picked.
"The reality is now you wait," he said Saturday after Calgary added eight names to its prospect pool. "Everyone’s happy on draft day.
"Now you wait for a period of time for these players to go through the development process."
General managers, scouts and players have all said for weeks they expected an unpredictable 2021 NHL entry draft after COVID-19 restrictions cancelled games or entire seasons, and prevented scouts from checking out talent in person.

Montreal Canadiens draft pick Logan Mailloux says he has to 'earn back trust' after conviction for sharing sex act pic

Updated: 19:07 ET, Jul 24 2021
LOGAN Mailloux has said he must "earn back the trust" of his fans after he was convicted of sharing a photo of a woman performing a sex act without her consent.
Mailloux, 18, whose selection by the Montreal Canadiens on Friday night sparked controversy, has offered a public apology after he was fined for the offence in Sweden last year.

Groups say Habs' draft choice 'trivializes' violence against women

“It’s really disappointing.”
On Friday, the Canadiens drafted 18-year-old Logan Mailloux, who was charged with defamation and offensive photography in Sweden while playing for a team there last year.
He had secretly taken photos of a woman while they were engaged in a sexual act and then shared the photos with his teammates. He was ordered to pay a fine of about CAN$2,100.
“One thing that really troubles me is the way we’re trying to trivialize and sweep this under the carpet with the fact that he was 17 years old at the time of his act, as if it was an error of youth,” Lemay said of the Canadiens’ defence of its draft pick.

The Montreal Canadiens have once more elected to move themselves out of the 2021 draft and defer to 2022. This time moving the 223rd overall pick to the Arizona Coyotes for a 2022 seventh-round pick.
The Coyotes trade a 7th-round pick in next year's draft to Montreal for the final pick in this draft and take Samuel Lipkin.https://t.co/4QbVWlayp8— Craig Morgan (@CraigSMorgan) July 24, 2021
Again, I like these moves. 2022 is a much deeper class, and it will be in Montreal. If there was nobody there for 223 that they really wanted to have in their prospect pool, it makes sense to punt again and

When the Montreal Canadiens entered into round four of the 2021 NHL Draft they were clearly set on adding some more pieces on their blue line, which was a key need. They landed on a left-handed defender from the Charlottetown Islanders, William Trudeau.
Like every player there’s a lot to build on to his game, but he possesses many good blocks to build upon as he continues his Junior career.
Birthplace:
Charlottetown Islanders (QMJHL)
Trudeau played on the dominant team in the QMJHL’s Atlantic bubble, Charlottetown. The team won 35 of its 40 games played, and never went beyond regulation in any of them. Four of the top five scorers in the league played for the Islanders, and Trudeau himself had a solid season, collecting 31 points in 40 games with a +34 rating.

In the past few years, the Montreal Canadiens have made a habit of dedicating a draft to selecting several players at the same position with the hope of finding one or two diamonds in the rough.
It started in 2018 when the organization followed up the pick of Jesperi Kotkaniemi by adding fellow centremen Jacob Olofsson, Cam Hillis, Allan McShane, Samuel Houde, and Brett Stapley. The following year, it was time to stock the cupboard of left-handed defencemen by selecting Jayden Struble, Mattias Norlinder, Gianni Fairbrother, Jacob LeGuerrier, and Kieran Ruscheinski.

For the 63rd selection in the 2021 NHL Draft, the Montreal Canadiens looked to their own backyard so to speak, taking Riley Kidney from the Acadie-Bathurst Titan of the QMJHL. The general consensus around Kidney is that he will be more of a long-term project for the club, but there is a lot to like about his game.
Birthplace:
Acadie-Bathurst Titan (QMJHL)
He had a solid 2020-21 season with the Titan, putting up 38 points in 33 games. What likely put him on the Habs radar, however, was his explosion of 17 points in just nine playoff games that same season. I actually caught one of his playoff games and have to say he stood out a lot as a highly skilled player at the junior level.

With their third pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, the Montreal Canadiens jumped across the Atlantic to Finland to select Oliver Kapanen who spent his last season playing for KalPa’s U20 team. While Riley Kidney has drawn praise for his playmaking and on-ice vision, Kapanen is all about putting pucks in the net. He put that skill on display when he led the U20 league in Finland with 25 goals in 37 games played. His strong play also earned him a loan in the second-tier Mestis where he put together a strong five-game showing as well.

Logan Mailloux has a long journey ahead. It's difficult to see how the Canadiens have helped him along – The Athletic

The camera popped on, and Logan Mailloux was sitting there, staring out into the unknown. He looked uneasy, probably wracked with nerves, as he prepared to read a statement, much like Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin did the night before.
This was Mailloux’s first opportunity to explain what happened with that young woman in Sweden back in November, to explain why he asked NHL teams not to draft him this year, to tell the hockey world how he plans to make amends.
“During an intimate moment with a young woman, I took a picture of us without her consent,” Mailloux said, reading a prepared statement. “I sent it to my teammates to impress them. It was totally irresponsible and a stupid act that I committed without thinking twice. For that lack of judgment on my part, I was fined by Swedish law. I know I caused a lot of harm to this person and their family, and I regret doing this stupid and egotistical act. I deeply regret it. What I did now is unfortunately a part of both her life and mine. I’ve apologized to her but, nonetheless, this will follow her for the rest of her life. And for that, I deeply and sincerely regret it.

The NHL Draft started with a flurry of trade action, some surprising picks, and a long second day that wasn't quite as busy on the player movement front.
Friday and Saturday set the stage for what should be a busy week ahead, especially with so many rumoured deals still hanging -- including the biggest in Jack Eichel -- and free agency looming on Wednesday.

Toronto Maple Leafs select winger Matthew Knies 57th overall in NHL entry draft

The six-foot-two, 210-pound left-winger said Doan used to tell him before every game not to be the most-skilled player, but the best player.
"That’s the kind thing that kind of sticks with me, that I kind of tell myself before games," said Knies, who Toronto picked 57th overall in the second round of the NHL entry draft Saturday.
Doan was a big influence on the young forward growing up.
"I got to pick his brain on a daily basis so that was huge for me," Knies said. "He helped me mature really quickly. Just to learn from him was really special."

A prospect selected by the Montreal Canadiens in a controversial move at the NHL entry draft on Friday says he believes the team can help make him a better person.
Logan Mailloux said he "deeply regrets" taking a photo of himself and a young woman without consent during an "intimate moment" and then sharing that photo with his teammates "to impress them."
“It was totally irresponsible and a stupid act that I committed without thinking twice," he told reporters Saturday.

Montreal police make 15 arrests after Canadiens win, promise to be ready for finals

"We're satisfied with the way things went last night, we thank Montrealers for being able to rejoice in peace, respecting each other and respecting property," Insp. David Shane said in an interview.
"Obviously, a few individuals or a few groups of individuals decided otherwise and decided to take it to another level, but fortunately our police officers were very professional, very patient."
Police said the arrests were for assault, armed assault or obstruction — all against police officers. Eight police vehicles were vandalized and at least one was overturned.
Around 9 p.m. on Thursday, police began restricting people from entering the area near the Bell Centre to avoid overcrowding. Eventually, exuberant fans began jumping on the cruisers, which were positioned strategically to block traffic and keep revellers safe, Shane said.
