"When I'm the seller, I'm answering the phones and I've got somebody that people want — I control it a little bit more," said Holland, now GM of the Edmonton Oilers. "When you're a buyer, I'm making a call and telling somebody I'm interested in his player.
"It's poker. You're playing poker. That's the art of being a general manager at trade deadline time."
Some executives have already made moves — including a few who have pushed their chips all-in — with Monday's 3 p.m. ET cutoff just over the horizon.
New York Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello acquired veteran forwards Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac from the New Jersey Devils for picks and prospects last week, while the Florida Panthers cleared salary cap space to give themselves wiggle room by moving winger Brett Connolly as part of a package to the Chicago Blackhawks.

Canada nearing peak of next wave of COVID-19, Tam says as Ontario sets case record

"With the current acceleration of COVID-19 activity, approaching the peak of the second wave, and a concerning rise in the proportion of cases that involve more contagious variants of concern, strong public health measures and individual precautions must be sustained where COVID-19 is circulating," Tam said in a statement.
Tam said intensive care admissions across the country increased by 23 per cent over the last seven days compared to the week before, noting the spike is straining the country's health-care system.
She said COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations are increasingly affecting younger people, adding figures show a jump in the number of hospitalizations among those 40 to 59 years old.

Ontario gave hospitals the power to transfer patients to field hospitals or different hospitals without their consent just as the province reported 4,456 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, marking a new single-day high for new infections. The Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, the only health care facility in Canada dedicated exclusively to COVID-19, is seeing a rising tide of ICU patients. And, small businesses in the province have been “tremendously upset” by the constantly shifting opening rules and lack of financial support, according to one strategist.
