Indian rescuers on Tuesday pulled out all 41 construction workers trapped inside a collapsed tunnel in the Himalayas for 17 days, hours after drilling through the debris of rock, concrete and earth to reach them, officials said.

Vertical drilling, meanwhile, has reached a depth of 42 metres out of the 86 metres needed, as on Tuesday morning. Earlier, the drilling was being carried out by a huge auger machine whoch got stuck in the rubble
The tunnel collapse trapping 41 workers occurred in a highly sensitive Himalayan ecological zone.
A team of 12 experts in rat-hole mining, a risky and illegal method of extracting coal, has been working on the last 10 or 12-metre stretch of the collapsed portion of the tunnel, which is part of the Char Dham project in Uttarakhand.
