It s been 10 years since the City of Vancouver began working toward reconciliation with local First Nations. Monday, it unveiled a new strategy recognizing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
With several vacancies on the Vancouver Police Board, the Squamish, Musqueam and Tsleil-Waututh Nations are pushing to have their members appointed to the civilian body, which provides oversight and governance to the Vancouver Police Department.
An elder from the Squamish Nation is calling on the B.C. government and the City of Vancouver to appoint First Nations representatives to fill vacancies on the Vancouver Police Board.
