Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi have opened a bridge over the river Feni, a step in strengthening connectivity with India’s northeastern region.

The bridge, known as Maitree Shetu, is a testimony to Bangladesh’s continued commitment to support neighbouring India, Hasina said during the virtual inauguration of the bridge on Tuesday.
In 2010, the then chief minister of Tripura placed a proposal before Hasina to build a bridge over the river, pointing out that the bridge is important to the business community of India’s northeastern region for using the Chattogram seaport. ....

A Chattogram court has sentenced nine people to death over the murder of an expatriate in Fatikchhari 17 years ago.

Chattogram s Fourth Additional District and Sessions Judge Farzana Akhter announced the verdict on Monday.
The convicts have also been fined Tk 20,000 each, according to state prosecutor Md Nasir Uddin.
One of the 10 accused in the case had died and was therefore cleared of the charges. But only one of the nine remaining suspects was present in court while the others are absconding.
The accused had killed Nesar Ahmed Tota of Kachuapar in Fatikchhari Upazila on Nov 1, 2003, according to the case dossier. ....

An unofficial one-day has been called off as an Ireland Wolves player tests positive for Covid-19 in Chattogram on Friday, said a source at Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

17kg gold seized at Shah Amanat airport in Chattogram

Customs officials have recovered 17.4 kilograms of gold from an aircraft at Chattogram’s Shah Amanat International Airport.

Nurunnahar Lily, assistant commissioner of BCS Customs and Excise, said the gold was discovered on Biman Bangladesh’s flight BG-128 returning from Abu Dhabi on Monday morning.
Authorities carried out a search on a tip-off after the plane landed, she told bdnews24.com.
“We recovered 150 bars of gold, weighing 17.4 kilograms, after searching the air-conditioning panel above the passenger’s seat.”
Authorities are yet to make any arrest over the matter.
“We are looking into who is connected with the smuggling of gold,” said Lily. ....
