Scientists Discover Over 100,000 New Lunar Craters

According to new data, our moon has a lot more craters than previously thought. In fact, a total of 109,956 newly discovered craters have been located in the low and middle latitude areas of the moon. They were found by artificial intelligence that was given data obtained by Chinese lunar orbiters. The researchers uploaded the data with thousands of craters that have already been detected and trained the algorithm to locate new ones. They used data collected from the Chang’e 1 and Chang’e 2 lunar orbiters. In an email to Live Science, Chen Yang, who is an associate professor of Earth sci...

There are more than 100,000 craters on the moon

There are more than 100,000 craters on the moon That's far more than the 9,137 officially recognized by the International Astronomical Union. Side view of the crater Moltke taken from Apollo 10. Image: Wikipedia Both the Earth and the Moon have been hit many times throughout their long 4.5 billion year history. Once something hits the Moon, that event becomes frozen in time. Earth, on the other hand, brushes these impact craters off and moves on with its life. That’s the reason there are so many craters on the Moon compared to Earth! What’s more, their formation and evolution record the h...

Moon has way (way) more craters than we thought

Moon has way (way) more craters than we thought Patrick Pester The moon has many more craters than we thought, a new study finds.  More than 109,000 new craters were discovered in the low- and mid-latitude regions of the moon using artificial intelligence (AI) that was fed data collected by Chinese lunar orbiters.  The number of craters recorded on the moon's surface is now more than a dozen times larger than it was before. The findings were published Dec. 22 in the journal Nature Communications.  "It is the largest lunar crater database with automatic extraction for the mi...

Scientists Solve 'Flea Mystery'----Chinese Academy of Sciences

Of all the parasites in the animal kingdom, fleas hold a pre-eminent position. After all, the Black Death, caused by a flea-transmitted bacterium, was the deadliest pandemic in the recorded history of mankind.   "Despite their medical significance, the placement of fleas on the tree of life represents one of the most persistent enigmas in the evolution of insects," said Erik Tihelka, undergraduate at the University of Bristol who led the study.   Over the years, researchers have proposed many hypotheses regarding the origin of fleas, most arguing that their closest relatives lie among t...

The moon may have far more lunar craters than previously known CNN 12/22/2020 By Katie Hunt, CNN © Juan Mabromata/AFP/Getty Images Using artificial intelligence, Chinese scientists identified over 109,000 previously unrecognized lunar craters on the moon's surface. The moon is shown here, as seen from Buenos Aires on December 21. Moon craters formed when meteorites and asteroids slammed into the lunar surface. Like fossils on Earth, they reveal something about the history of the solar system and how planets were formed. Using artificial intelligence, Chinese scientists h...
