Many voiced concerns about privacy, fearing facial recognition, discrimination and harassment, while Chief Eric Winstrom stressed multiple times the drones would be used on a mission-specific basis.
The Grand Rapids Police Department wants to hear feedback from community members as it considers buying Small Unmanned Aerial Systems, also known as drones.
“The backpack ban is not ideal but, at the end of the day, they have to do whatever it takes to get the guns out of the schools,” Tim Russ, a union representative, said.
