There has been a sharp rise in the numbers of children in care since the start of the pandemic.
The number of children and young people in care in Northern Ireland has hit a record high. Children's social care statistics from the five health trusts here reveal that 3,383 children were being looked after last year. That's the highest number since the introduction of the Children Order (NI) 1995. In the last ten years, the number of children in care rose by 30% and by 46% since 1999 when the lowest number was recorded under the 1995 Children Order legislation.
