국내 연구진이 기존의 2진법 대신 3진법 연산을 하는 차세대 반도체 기술을 개발했다. 강주훈 성균관대 신소재공학과 교수는 조정호 연세대 화공생명공학부 교수와 공동으로 ‘3진법 반도체’ 소자를 개발했다고 26일 밝혔다. 
그간 반도체는 전류가 흐르는 상태(on)를 1로, 전류가 흐르지 않는 상태(off)를 0으로 인식해 0ê³¼ 1로 표현하는 2진법으로 정보를 처리하는 게 일반적이다. 3진법 반도체는 0ê³¼ 1에 2까지 추가해 0, 1, 2의 세 가지 값으로 정보를 처리한다. 
3진법으로 신호를 구현하면 처리해야 할 정보의 양이 줄어 든다.  ê·¸ ê²°ê³¼ 계산 속도가 빨라지고 전력 소모도 줄어든다. 가령 숫자 128을 2진법으로 나타내려면 비트(bit) 8개가 필요하지만, 3진법에서는 트리트(trit) 5개만 있으면 저장할 수 있다.

최근 4ì°¨ 산업혁명의 핵심인 인공지능(AI), 자율주행, 사물인터넷(IoT) 등에 대한 기술 수요가 늘면서 대규모 정보를 빠르게 처리하는 고성능 반도체의 필요성은 더욱 커졌지만 2진법 기반의 반도체 소자는 단위면적당 집적도 향상을 위한 물리적 한계에 봉착한 상태다. 이에 따라 최근 학계에서는 이를 해결할 대안으로 3진법 반도체 연구가 활발하다. 
 
연구팀은 서로 다른 문턱 전압을 갖는 두 종류의 반도체를 순차적으로 구동하는 방식으로 3진법 정보 처리에 필요한 0, 1, 2 상태를 안정적으로 구현하는 데 성공했다. 또 3진법 반도체 소자를 이용해 ë‹¤ì–‘í•œ 논리 연산이 제대로 구동된다는 사실도 í™•ì¸í–ˆë‹¤. 
강 교수는 “이번에 개발한 3진법 반도체 소자 구조는 기존의 반도체 공정에서 큰 변경이나 추가 없이 웨이퍼에 적용할 수 있다”ë©° “향후 3진법을 초과하는 다진법 연구로 기술을 확장할 계획”이라고 말했다. 
연구 결과는 국제학술지 ‘어드밴스드 머티리얼스’ 22일자에 실렸다.
