Good Samaritans, fire crews, police and staff are being praised for helping more than 200 people escape two seniors buildings in St. Albert safely Thursday evening.
The Citadel Mews West Continuing Care Facility caught fire just before 8 p.m., and bystanders, local residents and staff rushed to help get residents out the doors.
Richard Belley s 86-year-old father, Maurice, had lived in the residence for five or six years and was among the 100 from that building to be evacuated. ....

Three people were injured in a massive fire at a St. Albert seniors residence Thursday night. A fire started in the Citadel Mews residence around 8 p.m. Thursday. (Submitted by Michel Ferland)
Three people were hospitalized after a massive fire broke out at a seniors residence in St. Albert, northwest of Edmonton Thursday night.
Two people were treated for smoke inhalation and were in serious condition, and a third person suffered minor lacerations, officials said, after fire engulfed the Citadel Mews West Continuing Care Facility just before 8 p.m.
City of St. Albert spokesperson Cory Sinclair said both continuing care residents and independent living residents were evacuated from the building. ....

ST. ALBERT, Alta. – Fire has destroyed part of a retirement complex northwest of Edmonton.
Officials say three residents suffered smoke inhalation but no one has died.
Flames broke out at Citadel Mews West Continuing Care Facility in St. Albert just before 8 p.m. Thursday.
A statement from the City of St. Albert says high winds fanned the fire prompting requests for help from fire departments in Morinville, Spruce Grove, Strathcona Country and Edmonton.
Crews kept the fire from spreading to the neighbouring Citadel Mews East building in the roughly 10-year-old complex. which offered a range of services from independent living to long-term care. ....
