A Navy investigation has absolved the pilot and aircrew of error in the August helicopter crash that killed five crew members off San Diego’s coast, according to a news release Wednesday.
The Navy says a helicopter crash that killed 5 crewmembers off the coast of California last year was caused by mechanical failure, not pilot error.
The helicopter, which was operating off of the USS Abraham Lincoln, ended up losing control when it was landing, struck its rotors on the deck, and fell into the sea.
Navy investigators concluded that the Aug. 31 helicopter crash that resulted in the death of five sailors was caused by a mechanical error.
The service said it recovered the lost aircraft from a depth of about 5,300 feet with the help of a salvage and dive team from Naval Sea Systems Command.
