DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – De Pere dedicated a space for its long-time mayor.
On Wednesday, the city formally dedicated the James Street Mall area, along the Union Hotel and Restaurant, as Michael J. Walsh Plaza.
The plaza honors the former mayor who served from April 1996 to April 2020.
Before becoming mayor, Walsh also served 14 years on the city’s park board, contributing to a number of projects, including the Claude Allouez Bridge, The Riverwalk, downtown murals, the planned Mulva Cultural Center and Southwest Park.
According to the proclamation, signed by current mayor, James Boyd, “We feel the serene and beautiful rest area on James Street serves as a fitting place to remember and permanently honor Michael J. Walsh and his many contributions to De Pere.”
