说起平江起义，必然会提到“三月扑城”。
1928年3月16日，20余万农民组成的暴动队伍化装成挑担的、唱戏的、舞龙的、买菜的、道士等，向平江县城东的三阳街、城北的画桥、西街和南街集结。20余万人，像一股怒潮，汹涌不断。近百里的大道上，一直没有断过队伍。大家手执大刀、长枪，从各路冲进城里，和驻城的敌军展开激烈的战斗。
