The West Side Market is obviously the best-known market in Cleveland. But local markets were a huge part of the heartbeat of the city in the first half of the 19th century and there were many more providing fresh produce and more to shoppers. Almost every neighborhood and shopping plaza had their own market, whether it was an open-air one like Central Market or a corner storefront like Maroun's Market on Hough Avenue.

The Flats were initially established as a residential area for a heavily Irish population in the mid 1800s. Many of the workers that built the Ohio and Erie Canal, which jumpstarted the development of Cleveland, lived in the West Bank of the Flats but eventually left for downtown because of tough living conditions. In the mid-19th century, the Flats became an industrial center of Cleveland. John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil played a big part in that when the company built a headquarters on the East Bank. Originally published by H.R. Page and Co. in 1889, Cleveland Illustrated was given to the Michael Schwartz Library of Cleveland State in 2003. The book contained 135 images of early Cleveland. Thankfully, they were saved and preserved and are now a glorious snapshot of what the city looked like before the turn of the century.

Before the Greater Cleveland Aquarium opened in the Flats in 2012, there was the Cleveland Aquarium. The latter opened February 6, 1954, and was located in Gordon Park. It closed to the public in June 1985 (due to structural and budget problems), with some exhibits moved to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
