Dorset councillors' fury over being told meetings must be held in offices

SOME Dorset councillors say they will not be forced back into council offices when the Government rules change on May 7.
Dorset Council has said that even if it has to hold meetings in person, as the Government expects, there will not be room for all councillors, officers, public and press to meet safely, either for full council meetings, or most committees.
Instead the authority is investigating holding fewer meetings and delegating more decision making to a handful of cabinet members, or senior council officers, where its powers allow.

114 new homes 'would ruin Dorset village'
DORSET councillors claim proposals for more than 100 extra homes on the edge of a north Dorset village would overwhelm the community and ruin its rural character.
Dorset Council’s northern area planning committee has rejected an outline application for up to 114 homes on a triangular site south of Lower Road, Stalbridge.
Cllr Graham Carr Jones, ward councillor for the area, says the debate illustrates how the failure to meet government land supply targets has put the area at the mercy of developers, rather than local people.
Although councillors voted unanimously against the proposal in principal the decision is already out of their hands and will be decided by a planning inspector at a hearing expected to be held in April.

Climate change consultation 'likely to produce the answers Dorset council wants'

DORSET’S climate change consultation is likely to produce the answers Dorset Council wants – Dorchester town council planning committee has been told.
“Yet again it’s a consultation which isn’t a consultation – it’s carefully designed to get the answers they want to get,” claimed Cllr Susie Hosford.
She warned that the exercise of making preferred choices would later be used to cut policies which were too expensive, a view backed by fellow town councillor Cllr Andy Canning, who also sits on Dorset Council.
He said that the way the consultation is designed limits the ability to make views known on anything other than the topics Dorset Council wants a response to.

10 homes planned for Sherborne are deferred

IT’S back to the drawing board for a ten-home affordable scheme for Littlefield at Sherborne.
Councillors have decided they love the development, being put forward by Dorset-based Magna Housing, but have serious doubts about road access to the site.
Ward councillor Matt Hall said he was in favour of the project but couldn’t vote for it when he knew there was a risk emergency vehicles might not be able to get through because of cars parked in the area.
He said the design of the site access meant cars coming out of the development would be forced onto the wrong side of the road by vehicles which constantly park in the road.
