Letters March 3: Options at Clover Point; give credit to teachers; Oak Bay marina's future

Given the outpouring of outrage over plans to make Clover Point car-free, apparently because some folks insist they will no longer be able to get close to nature, it appears city planners are missing a golden opportunity. Despite the fact most Victorians would agree the prodigious (and increasing) numbers of automobiles on our streets are responsible for the fossil-fuelled, deplorably unhealthy environment in which we find ourselves today, let me humbly suggest a plan that is financially sound and within reach: How about an elevated, multi-level parkade, built in the shape of a four leaf cl...

Letters Feb. 27: Ben Isitt vs. CFAX; Clover Point debate

As noted in materials that I sent to the Times Colonist on Feb. 24, my complaint is: “Against the licensee of CFAX in the Greater Victoria area for breaching its obligations under the Broadcasting Act and the Radio Regulations to provide programming that is of a high standard and balanced on matters of public concern. Specifically, my complaint arises from the licensee’s unbalanced and misleading programming on the matter of homelessness and poverty in the Greater Victoria area.” This context is relevant to the subject matter of the editorial. It is therefore odd that it was...

Letters Feb. 26: Give city staff credit; conflating racism and criticism; access to parks

I cannot understand the TC’s ruthless defence of the status quo, through an editorial rife with inflammatory and unempirical statements. It disrespects the professional planning staff at the city, who have spent far more time researching best practice in urban green space and infrastructure than the editors at the TC. This includes accessibility concerns, the balance of which goes much further than simply vehicle access. No city with Victoria’s coastal amenities would waste the opportunity to reimagine a site like Clover Point during a major transformation, as the pump station pr...

Comment: Victoria needs to take care of the small things first

A commentary by a former Times Colonist reporter. If Victoria councillors are ever wondering why big new initiatives like banning cars from Clover Point are met with such pushback, they might . . .

Letters Feb. 25: Paying for parking at regional parks; madness at Clover Point - Vimarsana News

Letters Feb. 25: Paying for parking at regional parks; madness at Clover Point

Importantly, this enjoyment can be found daily without the barrier of parking fees. Parking is free in most of our regional parks, with the exception of Sooke Potholes and Thetis Lake during the summer season when tourists (who don’t pay taxes for park use) are amongst the visitors. The CRD’s parks committee, which I do not sit on, began looking at new funding streams for parks in 2019, including potentially introducing parking fees. Residents already pay for our regional park system through a levy to the CRD. In Central Saanich, the oldest regional park, Island View, is mentioned in...
