The production of state-owned Coal India Ltd (CIL) rose 8.27 per cent to 71.86 MT last month as compared to 66.37 MT in December 2022. According to the statement, the cumulative coal production of India during April-December 2023 increased to 684.31 MT from 608.34 MT in the year-ago period.
India's coal production for the fiscal year 2023-24 increased by 12.29%, reaching 664.37 million tonnes (MT) from April to December 25, 2023, compared to 591.64 MT in the same period the previous year, according to the Ministry of Coal. Coal dispatch during this period rose to 692.84 MT from 622.40 MT in the year-ago period.
The total coal production from captive, commercial coal mines during the April-November period was around 83.90 MT, while the total coal dispatch was 89.67 MT, registering a year-on-year growth of 24 per cent and 31 per cent, respectively, from the same period in FY23.
The company's mega projects Gevra, Dipka, and Kusmunda located in the Korba district have contributed significantly to the total dispatch of 100 million tonnes of coal with 30.3 MT, 19.1 MT and 25.1 coal supply, respectively. Based in Bilaspur, SECL, with 67 blocks, is among the top three coal-producing subsidiaries of Coal India Ltd (CIL) under the Ministry of Coal. In FY23, CIL's output was 703.21 MT out of which SECL's contribution was 167 MT.
The Indian coal ministry expects coal dispatch to exceed one billion tonnes in the current fiscal year, according to a statement. The ministry has set a target to produce and dispatch 1,012 million tonnes of coal, and it anticipates that the second half of the year will see a higher rate of production and dispatch. In the previous fiscal year, 500 million tonnes of coal had been dispatched by 9 November, while this year the same mark was achieved on 17 October, 23 days earlier.
