Hicklin family changed history as African American politicians
State Journal-Register Print kicker: SANGAMON LINK Springfield’s Hicklin family provided two of Sangamon County’s earliest successful African American politicians, as well as leadership in the local civil rights movement. Hezkiah Hicklin was the first African-American to hold public office in Sangamon County, serving one term on the county Board of Supervisors. Newspaper records are incomplete, but Hicklin was casting votes as an assistant supervisor from Springfield’s First Ward by Aug. 28, 1874.
