UK scientists gear up to build a comet-chasing spacecraft that will launch in 2028 The mission will allow scientists to know about the history of the solar system as never seen before. Dec 14, 2020 16:02:35 IST Engineers in the United Kingdom will soon start working on a spacecraft that will chase comets, track them down and mapping the celestial objects in three dimensions. According to a report by The Guardian, the mission involves three spacecrafts designed to work together. The mothership will be built in the UK by Thales Alenia Space and will hold two smaller robotic probes from Japan ...

‘Comet chasing’ spacecraft will be designed in UK 14 Dec 2020 How the Comet Interceptor spacecraft could look (Credit: Thales Alenia Space) Engineers in Bristol and Oxfordshire will design a new ‘comet chasing’ spacecraft that could illuminate the origins of life on Earth. Thales Alenia Space has won the contract to design the mother ship for the Comet Interceptor mission, the government announced today (14 December). Design will be centred in Bristol and Harwell in Oxfordshire, a national centre for the UK’s thriving space sector. The main spacecra...

British engineers to start work on 'comet chaser' probe Ian Sample Science editor © Provided by The Guardian Photograph: Alexander Ryumin/Tass British engineers are to start work on a new spacecraft that will lie in wait for passing comets then chase them down and map their surfaces in three dimensions. Appropriately dubbed the “comet chaser”, the mission will not only record details of the comets’ contours, but also the composition of the dust and and gases released as they hurtle through the heavens. The mission involves three spacecraft that are designed to collabo...

D ecember 14, 2020 – In the UK, Thales Alenia Space, the joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), has been selected by the European Space Agency (ESA) to lead one of two parallel studies for the Comet Interceptor mission. The Comet Interceptor mission consists of one spacecraft and two small probes. It was selected by ESA in June 2019 to combine breakthrough technology in new comet discoveries to reveal information about pristine comets entering the inner Solar System or an interstellar object passing through the Solar System. The scientific mission was originally proposed ...
