Former NASA astronaut and Apollo 11 Command Module Pilot Michael Collins has died aged 90, his family have announced.

“He spent his final days peacefully, with his family by his side,” they said.
Collins flew on the Gemini 10 mission in July 1966, which was part of NASA’s Gemini programme to conduct human spaceflight missions in preparation for the Apollo moonlandings.

Collins then flew with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the Apollo 11 mission that, on 20 July 1969, saw human feet set on the Moon for the first time in human history. ....

Apollo 11 astronaut Major General Michael Collins (USAF (Retired)) has died at the age of 90 after a battle with cancer. In 1969, Collins was the Command Module Pilot for the first crewed lunar landing, and remained in orbit aboard the Command Service Module (CSM) Columbia while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin descended to the surface.
One of the third group of NASA astronauts chosen in the 1960s, Michael Collins was born on October 31, 1930 in Rome, Italy, where his father was the US military attaché. As an Army brat, he spent his childhood in many locations and joined the US Air Force in 1952, becoming a fighter pilot and later a test pilot. ....

American astronaut Michael Collins, who as pilot of the Apollo 11 command module stayed behind on July 20, 1969, while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin traveled to the lunar surface to become the first humans to walk on the moon, died on Wednesday at age 90, his family said. ....
