Covid-19: 98 media practitioners receive their jabs on Wednesday (June 9)

PUTRAJAYA: The first batch of media practitioners received their first dose of Covid-19 vaccine here on Wednesday (June 9) under the National Covid-19 immunisation programme.
The Dewan Seroja vaccination centre here saw 98 reporters, photographers and video cameramen from around the Klang Valley streaming in for their jabs from as early as 9am.
The Star photographer Azhar Mahfof, 43, was relieved to finally get his vaccination appointment this week.
“Going to work every day to cover assignments exposes us to the risk of getting Covid-19.
As a father of five children, I am worried about getting infected, but our line of work means that we continue to go out in the field even during lockdown periods. ....

Fake news rule 'only for short term'

PUTRAJAYA: The Emergency Ordinance to act against fake news is a short-term remedy to deal with misinformation, says the de facto law minister.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan added that along with other ordinances enacted during this period, it will cease at the latest six months after the Emergency is lifted.
He said that when the proclamation of Emergency ends and Parliament is called, ordinances will be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat.
“During this time, the ordinances, after being tabled, can then be annulled, ” he told a joint press conference with Multimedia and Communications Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah to explain the latest ordinance which took effect yesterday. ....

Malaysia fast-tracks 5G with $3.7B goverment-funded network

Malaysia has revived its stalled 5G program with the aim of going live by year-end.
Announcing the plan on Friday, Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has returned to the original scheme of a government-funded wholesale network accessible to all operators.
He promised 15 billion Malaysian Ringgits (US$3.87 billion) would be invested over ten years to roll out a state-owned wholesale network.
The government would establish a special purpose vehicle that would hold 5G spectrum and would own, implement and manage the 5G infrastructure, he said in a speech unveiling the government s digital economy blueprint.
This infrastructure cost-sharing enables telecommunication companies to generate higher returns and, in turn, provide better and cheaper 5G services to consumers, he said. ....
