TRA offering 18 train services today, despite strike

The Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) yesterday confirmed that it is to offer 18 commuter train services today, even as most of its drivers go on strike. Six of the commuter trains would be express services, while 12 would be standard, the TRA said. The earliest available train is the No. 3007 express train from Changhua to Taitung departing at 6:08am, while the last is the No. 1253 standard train from Keelung to Hsinchu at 7:09pm, the TRA said. Union bargaining brings railway corp a step closer

The legislature’s Transportation Committee yesterday voted nine to five to grant preliminary approval to a draft statute establishing a state-run Taiwan Railway Corp. The government is proposing transitioning the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) from an agency to a state-run corporation after major express train derailments in 2018 and last year exposed structural problems within the agency that have compromised safety. The committee considered a version of the draft statute proposed by the Taiwan Railway Labor Union, the largest union in the agency, in addition to the government’s dr...
